The Legend of Erazem of Predjama

Erazem Lueger, known as Erazem of Predjama, was a daring 15th-century knight who defied the Habsburgs and became a legend in Slovenia. After avenging a friend by killing a high-ranking noble, he was forced to flee and took refuge in Predjama Castle, perched high on a cliff.

When imperial forces besieged the castle, they expected a quick surrender. But Erazem used a secret tunnel running through the caves behind the castle to bring in food and supplies. For over a year, he outsmarted his enemies—and even mocked them by sending down fresh cherries.

His resistance came to a sudden end when a servant betrayed him. One night, while Erazem was using the castle’s toilet, located on the outer wall, his enemies fired a well-aimed cannonball that killed him on the spot.

Today, visitors to Predjama Castle can still see the secret tunnel and the toilet tower, where the legendary knight made his final—and most infamous—stand.
